008  .  PISCINA MIRABILIS

A STRUCTURE . A ROOF . A CENTER

The design proposal for the reuse of Piscina Mirabilis revolves around two concepts: on one hand the impact of a museum on an urban level, the importance it brings to the area and its ability to revive a community. The second concept focuses on the museum as a shelter, a house for the arts, a roof for culture and history.Therefor, besides acting as a space dedicated to the exposition of artworks, this museum must also offer space for interaction and communication, with the new structural roof and publicly accessible cistern terrace acting as the main components of this new public space.

A STRUCTURE . A MUSEUM . A PATH

A large open staircase, visible from both the terrace and the main street, welcomes the visitor to the main entrance of the museum for contemporary art. Slowly going down, the arches and open space are given a new perspective. Upon entering the lower level of the museum, the visitor is gently guided through exhibition spaces of various heights, offering different views of both the cistern space as well as the artworks inside. Whilst the main method of exploring a museum is movement, one should not forget the importance of silence and space for contemplation.
